Does ballet eventually cause any damage to your body? I don't mean if your doing ballet as a profession, but if you just take lessons. Will it cause damage to your body? If so, what kind of damage?
Thank you so much. God Bless!

Any actvity has a potential risk of injury. Ballet is no exception. However, if you do everything correctly, you should do fine. You will actually improve your body. You'll get a better posture, stronger muscles and you'll get more flexible.

Things to watch out for is your back and knees. You need to make sure that your knees are over your toes when you're bending them, don't let your toes point away to the sides more than your knees do. That's related to the turnout: if you turn out from the hips your knees are pointing the same direction as your toes. Make sure you warm up well before every class, and you'll be fine. Listen to the warnings that your teacher might give you, he/she's not joking.

The biggest risk for anyone taking ballet classes would be knee or ankle injuries. This is because ballet requires a fair amount of turning out from the hips. Not everyone (could as well be most of us) is built the way as to make turning out easy. Often you see people turning out too much. That happens from the knees and the ankles. They will get injured, and the damage could be difficult to cure.

You should be avare of your "natural turn out". That is when you turn out from hips. Never turn out feet any more than that!!!! There are small muscles attached to your pelvis, and to your thigh bone, that turn out the legs. You can strengthen and stretch those to make the best of your natural turn out.

If you perform the steps properly there is no risk. Learning ballet is a lot about learning to replace bad habits that can - if perpetuated - cause damage to you. And look silly as well ; ) But you should not be afraid! If you have a good teacher and you listen to her ballet is a great hobby!

I'm not too sure...Ive heard alot of injuries occur while learning ballet..and doing ballet classes...Like injuries to the hips, ankles, feet, and I'm not sure what else...

But I think u can get injuries from many activities that are strenuous like ballet... I dont think it causes "long-term damage"...but I think maybe a sprained ankle here or there...or even a broken ankle....blisters on ur feet....I dunno

EDIT....

o yea...ballet can help with flexibility, strength, ect...So it has alot of benefits...but it still has some risks....But in the long-run ballet ,may help u out..

ballet doesnt cause permanent damage to your body unless you end up hurting yourself. if you do pointe make sure you have had at least 3 or 4 years of dance training. pointe cant damage your spine as the first answer says, but if you are put on too early and your toes arent finished developing, it can deform them. as long as your having fun, and you dont hurt yourself, theres nothing wrong with taking ballet.

obviously, if you do it wrong, you could hurt yourself, but ballet can keep you fit and flexible. i'm on vacation from my ballet classes right now ( stupid summer....) and i can tell that i don't feel as tip top as i do when i'm shuttling back and forth from the studio.
pointe, is for more advanced dancers and can screw up your feet - but again, only if you do it wrong. the wrong shoes can wreck havoc on your feet, and the wrong technique will do the same. you have to be a certain age too, since when you are young ( under ten) your feet are still soft and the shoes can deform them.
however, if you just want to dance for fun, by all means do! if you have a good teacher, it can only be good for you.

There is a type of ballet that they call "point", & you need years of practice before you attempt to do point. Even 1 or 2 yrs. isn't enough. If you do point to soon, it can damage your spine & you'll have trouble the rest of your life. Check with a podiatrist or a professional ballet dancer. They will tell you the same thing.

NO!!! Ballet is really good for you, even if you don't do it as a profession. It improves your body actually. It improves your posture, makes you stronger, and makes you more flexible. Ballet is one of the best things you can do for your body, keep it up!!!
