I have some carpenter ants near my privacy fence and also in a spot near my lawnmower shop. What are the best ways to rid? Call an exterminator? I don't want to leave those spots a toxic dump just to rid them.

I just read on here that Nutrasweet will do it. the aspartame kills them. other things in the answers were cornmeal, salt, lemon slices, baby powder. I also saw a recipe with crunched up cat food, jelly and boric acid all mixed up and dropped in small balls around where they are. But boric acid can be harmful or fatal to pets and kids so be careful where you put it.
