Okay, I currently have bellsouth and Bellsouth DSL. They cost an arm and a leg. I want to Vonage, but I will have to cancel my current DSL. Any advice. What is another good DSL company that will support Vonage, and will allow me to still use my AOL? Thanks

I have Vonage and I don't think its that great. When I first got it I couldn't receive calls from anyone in my hometown. And then when you call them to try to fix a problem you get to talk to someone who hardly speaks any English. So your conversation usually includes a lot of excuse me's and pardon me's and takes 10x long than you expected. For me its very aggravating! It is true that it is a lot cheaper than any other phone service that's out there but its a big head ache at times. It kinda makes me realize the age old saying of you get what you pay for.

If you have DSL you have a phone line from a conventional phone company (ILEC or CLEC). If you remove the phone line you cannot have DSL. DSL uses the same line you use for voice phone.

This means that if you cancel your phone carrier you need another supplier. If cable internet service is available that can replace DSL and provide good speeds. Usually this costs more than DSL.

Please also understand that any phone company that depends upon the public Internet for transport cannot assure you will have acceptable voice Qualitly of Service (QoS).

Voice over IP (VoIP), which is what these companies claim to have, requires voice packets to be marked for priority processing and dispatch. If this does not happen, voice packets may be lost or delayed and will not meet the criterion of transfer in 125 mSec or faster and your QoS becomes affected to the degree it is not acceptable. The public internet is not designed for and does not respect voice packet priority treatment - hence the QoS cannot be guarenteed.

VoIP also requries sufficient bandwidth but bandwidth alone will not suffice to provide QoS.

No carrier, regardless of name, who uses the public internet for transport can assure you any QoS.

Sure they are less expensive BUT the trade off is uncertain voice quality - even unacceptable voice quality.
