After the death of someone...
Someone told me about how a man they know started hanging black rags up and blowing smoke from some kind of pipe into them. He hung them on the porch and in a tree. I didn't see it for myself, but am VERY curious as to why someone might do this. The man hanging the rags is Indian. Is this a tradition? I request that nobody guess at this. I really want to know where I can go online to research this. Google is of no help.

From what I understand is that black cloths are hung up after someone dies, It Is also done because black cloths are suppose to be imbued with some magical reflective powers that can stop evil things like ghost and demon or some ones soul from penetrating it.. Also black cloths are suppose to magically trap evil. And when you take the black cloths out side and hang them on tree's or what ever, The evil that is trapped in side of them will be scattered by the four winds away from your home and your community........................................................................

I think it's a way to pay respects to the dead. Maybe you should read about the indian culture more if your that interested. I don't have any websites at the moment.

I am not sure. I do know that many people did this as the Civil War was ending as a sign for the many who died.

I am part Native American and I have never heard of this.. doesn't mean it's 100% not true... but I don't think that is a common pratice
