If you're talking about football, we did use to stand in the stands. Then after various events like the Hillsbrough disaster, they changed the law to make stadiums all-seated. But the name 'stands' remained.

In the old days people probably stood to watch debates and stuff. Sitting came along as we got lazier. : )
