Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom is my favorite. It was moving and contains life lessons. I found it difficult to put down. I've also read The Five People You Meet in Heaven by the same author, but I still prefer Tuesdays with Morrie. Currently, I'm reading Mitch's new book For One More Day.

My fave book is probably "House of the Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer. It's really different than anything I've ever read before. It's about the life of a boy (from toddler to adolescent) who is a clone. It is a very twisted book; the characters are multi-dimensional and the hardships the character faces because of his identity are terrible. But yah, it's amazing. "Plain Truth" and "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult (omg spelling??) are really good too (very adult though. Not for immature people)
I don't really have a favourite author... but the stuff by Scott Westerfeld (not sure of spelling...) tends to be really good.
In response to one of the other answers "A boy called it" is absolutely amazing (though disturbing) and I would definitely recommend it.

I loved Tuesdays With Morrie too. It was very touching.

But my all time favorite book is A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, by Betty Smith. It was a such a moving coming of age book and it got me to be an avid reader. It was the first book I read and loved. I still own it today. :-)

It's The alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The book is so touching and gives you and extraordinary happiness while reading. You feel like you understand the world when you're reading it, along with the main character of the book.
I'm reading other Coelho books right now, and it seems like all of his books are pretty interesting (I am reading The witch of Portobello and the Manual of the warrior of light at the at the moment).
What is your favourite book? .

My favorite book was written by my favorite author: 1984 by George Orwell.
George Orwell taught himself how to write. He did not have any formal training or mentoring. He locked himself away and studied earnestly until he was satisfied with himself. And by doing this he kept his thoughts original ("Politics and the English Language", and "Why I Write"). I believe he had the idea for 1984 before he was able to write, that he lived as Winston Smith since he was very young. I taught myself to write in a similar way as Orwell taught himself. Orwell is one of my major influences.

As for 1984 itself, I always find it difficult to explain why it is my favorite novel. I think I would have greater success explaining why I like my second favorite novel. 1984 is a description of the very world we live in, or at least the world I live in. I've always felt that someone was watching me like Big Brother.
I hope Big Brother is not reading this...

"The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold and "Twilight" by Stephenie Meier. I love the first because the premise of the book seems to be similiar to some of my own life experiences and the second is because this book was the most truly addictive book I have read since Dean Koontz's "Intensity".

The Giver by Lois Lowry. This book is awesome. It is also short and easy to read. It really makes you think and you will have a new sense of gratitude for the life and choices you make for yourself. ... Also read The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Album? (Maybe)

I love Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini because the way he writes is original. his characters are very intelligent, and it has a lot of action. i can wait till the thrid one comes out!

i also love Inkheart and Inkspell by Cornelia Funke. I tend to go for Fantasy books because of how they describe magic and everything as if it actually exists, and plus they get to do cool and unexpected things in the book.
