Because there are people involved. On paper, communism looks really good. No classes, everybody earns the same salary, all needs are provided. In reality, you have the ruling class and everyone else. The ruling class has all the benefits and money while the workers have low salaries and rampant shortages of everything. In order to keep prices low enough for the peoples' measly salaries, the gov't must subsidize everything. This leads to bankruptcy, as we saw with the Soviet Union. If the people in charge of communist gov'ts would stick to the "rules", communism might work. I don't ever see that happening, though.

In theory, Communism is a good idea. It can be traced back to as far as the 4th century B.C. But in 1917 it became corrupt with greed when Lenin overthrew the Provincial Government.
There are many forms of communism.
Leninism
Marxism
Trotskyism
Christian communism
Primitive communism
These are just a few of the 20 or so.
To understand the failure of communism is to understand the failed mentality of it Leaders. We can't... But we can take a guess as to the reason why. By looking at what Communism is about, it can be made clear that in today's world it will not work.
Communism is a form of, and to the large extent a socialist society, where everyone shares equally in it's government, work, goods, pay, EVERYTHING. Karl Marx's theory to do away with capitalism and bring up the working class to a standard where all are equal was never to be implemented thanks to Lenin. Lenin saw an opportunity to implement his own theroy;
"We must show the peasants that the organization of industry on the basis of modern, advanced technology, on electrification which will provide a link between town and country, will put an end to the division between town and country, will make it possible to raise the level of culture in the countryside and to overcome, even in the most remote corners of land, backwardness, ignorance, poverty, disease, and barbarism".
But Lenin had a problem; Not everyone saw things the way he did, so began the steady elimination from political life all factions and parties whose views did not correspond to the position taken by Lenin and the Bolsheviks.
Lenin required that all persons believe in his rule and his thought. In 1918 he formed the Secret Police. Newspaper censorship was quickly imposed to combat any critism of Lenin, thus the begining of Leninism and the fall of true communism.
This is only a minute glimps of the many reasons communism failed. But the reason as I see it is that people want to think for themslves and do for themselves and have for themselves what makes them happy, freedom. Freedom to criticize your government, freedom of speech, freedom from persecution and detention without your rights being violated. Freedom to LIVE.

It's inefficient to push people into jobs they don't want and to ship things across countries...oh wait, we ship things across the world now....
China still does it to a certain extent, as does Cuba, so to say it has completely failed would be incorrect. It would be interesting to see what Russia's economy had been if they weren't expansive and spending money on the military. It'd also be interesting to see what Cuba's economy would be if not for the US trade embargo.
I'm not exactly sure how the governing process worked in Russia, but you can certainly conceive of economic systems that are communist in structure and yet have an elected government.

Corruption at the highest levels, where .01 percent of the population, the elite stay, while everyone works their as$es off and dies with nothing to show, nothing to pass on to their kids.
We are moving towards fascism in the US, but because companies, and people can compete, the theory is, that corruption can be balanced out. Once our government becomes beholden to corporations, it will be very hard to get a balance of corruption. And their side wins. Add globalization for flavor.

communism is in direct opposition to human nature, that is to work hard for PERSONAL profit. Humans don't work as hard when they get no personal reward out of it.
for example, you know that feeling you get when you're busting your hump at work & a co-worker skates thru the day doing the bare minimum to stay employed, then payday comes & you both get the same size paycheck? That's communism in a nutshell.

It is idealistic. It is based on the premise that everyone is willing to work equally for everyone else. People are willing to work when they get something in return, the basis of free enterprise.

Communism is based on the assumption that people are good, hardworking, and giving.
Capitalism on the assumption that people are lazy, selfish, and greedy.
History has shown the latter to be true.

Because when everybody owns something then nobody bothers to take care of it. There is no pride of ownership and no fruit from your labors; so why bother?
