It's not a problem to be with a Betta no. Betta's have issues with other Bettas for the most part. Neon's would probably do a little better in a bigger school, but tank size restricts that. I don't think they'll die because of it, but if you want to start out with that population when you first get that tank, I'd suspect you'd lose those neons because of the rise in ammonia and nitrites. They are extremely sensative to water chemistry. Start out with your Betta first, they are pretty hardy. Wait until you've cycled out the ammonia and nitrites to add your neons.

You need at least a 5 gallon tank to have them, a 2.5 is only big enough for the betta. An African dwarf frog might be alright in that size tank with your betta.I have a 5 gallon tank with 4 neon's,one male betta and one dwarf frog.

Right, the neons need to be in a school to be happy, at least 5-6 of them, and they like more room than that to zoom around in. They can also actually be fin nippers and nip on your betta. Less fish in the school increases that liklihood. So if you want happier fish, don't combine those 2.

If you really feel the need for a betta tankmate, you might try african Dwarf frogs, as long as you make sure all get fed (bettas are greedy); note this means you'd need to change water more often too, though. The betta would be just fine and happy in there by himself.

Yeah, that's fine. Bettas are only aggressive towards other Bettas or fish that have long fins (Bettas mistake long finned fish for other Bettas). Neons are perfect, but they can only live if your tank has a filter and a heater.
