Vasco Nunez de Balboa crossed Panama to the Pacific in 1513. The Spaniards explored northwards very rapidly, in search of the "straight of Anian", between America and China, which they hoped to be really close. By 1542 they travelled at least to San Diego bay, possibly even Oregon.

Balboa's the guy.
Do not be confused by the classic poem "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer," which incorrectly attributes it to "stout Cortez...silent, upon a peak in Darien." Great poem. Lousy history.
