Hey Coop:
That is what reading a good book or novel is all about. You do get to have a feeling of escaping lifes issues and actually enjoying yourself for a little bit of time.
This not only goes for people with psych issues because that really has nothing to do with this. What does have to do with this is enjoying yourself just like everyone else regardless of psych issues or not.
So, pick a book, get comfy stick your nose in that book, enjoy, escape into the book for a little while. Go ahead...it's ok to allow yourself to be happy and with this, this is something I know you can let yourself be happy and escape for just a little.
Enjoy yourself!
Be safe and be well

Reading is great, however if you reach for a book to avoid life or that you read to live rather then do, then yes its a bad thing. A book can not help you face your fears & life. You can read, but it wont do a thing till you apply it. Besides, do you really want to live your whole life hiding out?? Life, you only do it once. Dont wake up & realize its done & over & you did nothing & have nothing to show for it?

Yes. You are. But thank God for that. If I had not had books to help me before I left home am sure the outcome would not have been good. Books opened up a world outside my own. And it was grand. I learned a few things while I did. And it gave me hope for better things.

That sounds like an excuse for someone who is trying to justify never reading. Ha
I think it's okay to escape reality sometimes... real life is difficult sometimes, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to feel like you're in a different world or a different place. There's nothing wrong with it... it's good for your imagination.

lots of people get immersed in books, i for one do, but if you relate them to all the video games and computer traps and stuff, reality through a book is not the same, but it's better than lots of what we are focused on now a days. you could say that by focusing on one thing, like a book, is denying your life and reality, and this can be true. you sometimes tend to pick up characteristics that you read in books, and i guess it could depend on what kind of books you read... fiction, non-fiction, fantasy? well... i guess it depends on your own self-control and if you know where to draw the line and say... okay... the dishes need to be washed... i better get up and do them and stuff like that. i hope i have helped you understand ur question!

You can face up to the world 23.5 hours a day and still escape to a novel for half an hour.

My favorite author is Glen Cook, his 'Black Company' series and his 'Garrison Files'. I love to read but I can not and I don't know why. Now the only thing I read is the Bible, which is a good thing but I miss Cook's view of the Missouri River.

Reading is a good thing. You have your daily life and stuff to do - if you are doing them no problem. Reading is a great way to relax and just enjoying the moment.

you can say the same fro tv or movies, people watching hours of soap operas daily getting lost within the story. the only way i can see it being detrimental is if you only read or watch tv and don't actually live. but if you take a couple of hours daily just to escapee than its fine.

You're being entertained by a talented writer. It's up to you to budget your time and to organize your life. Escape is necessary to become refreshed.
