My little brother, who is 10 years old, smells HORRIBLE. I don't mean to be mean, but he really does. It's sort of embarrasing around others (it's a sweat problem), especially because it was his kindergarten teacher who pointed it out, about five years ago. Is this normal? Because at age five, he smelled like 16 year old boys after gym class. He's not hairy or anything, so I'm scared he has a gland problem. I don't know any names of these types of problems, and my dad refuses to get help, unless we can figure if there is, in fact something wrong. He has to be closely monitered when he showers, to make sure he gets the stench out, and he must always where deoderant and cologne, so not to bother anyone. I'm not sure if a sweat problem can be dangerous or not which is why I'm worried about him. Can someone tell me, based on the information, if he has some sort of problem or disease?

Thanks for some answers, but no, he is not overweight. He's actually very fit for his age.

Is he overweight? Has anyone mentioned this to his Dr. during regular physicals? I was going to mention precocious puberty, but you said that he was not showing any signs of puberty.
Hi, checked back...
there is a condition of having overactive sweat glands.. the smell from sweat is caused by bacteria. He probably needs a prescription antiperspirant, which he will have to get from the doctor. Also if his skin is oily already, he will need to bathe frequently (morning, after gym and at night)... the oil mixing with the extra sweat will make his b.o. almost unbearable.
It really should be addressed at his annual physical. You are a really good brother to look out for him like this!

Boys seem to start smelling much earlier than girls! My son is 7 1/2 years old and all of a sudden his armpits smelled like a grown mans! I do the same things as you - have him wash really well in the shower and use some deoderant. The only thing is I don't like using "grown up" deoderant on little kids. There are so many chemicals in the deoderant that probably aren't good for the little tykes! I have my son use a deoderant called "Naturally Fresh Deoderant Crystal" Roll On. This is all natural and it's made from natural mineral salts that kill the odor! It's amazing - I also use it myself. You can buy it at Wal-mart, Trader Joes, or any vitamin store. It's very inexpensive and it lasts a long time. You might tell your dad to purchase some of this and give it a try. In the meantime, boys are just smelly!

Take Care!

I have seven kids, that's right seven.

You are right, he should be checked, althoug he probably just has really active glands, still asking the Dr. is a good idea.

They are all different, but excessive underarm sweat and body odor, if he is really bathing well could be something in the glands I think. Sometimes though it is just that some people are narurally more sweaty and stinky. My 6 year old daughter has sweatier pits than normal. The Dr. Gave her a prescription deoderant and she is fine. He said it might get better with pberty or she might just have to use this deoderant and bathe a bit more often. i was worried becasue my other kids dont tend to get very smelly with daily or even every other day baths (With seven every other day can be practical). I see that she bathes every day though and she is OK with this deoderant.

Child for child though, my girls get smellier with the same activites. they just usually are better about washing where it counts.

Go to a health food store and buy him some chlorophyll tablets. Have him take whatever the recommended dosage is. Chlorophyll is 100% harmless to people of any age (it's the green stuff in veggies), and it controls odor very well. And it's not expensive.

Make sure he is not bathing with antibacterial (pro-fungus)soap. That stuff actually encourages the growth of fungus and "bad" bacteria by destroying the protective normal skin flora. If he's been using that stuff, he will have a major stink problem. Get him to eat some yogurt (any kind with live cultures) every day for a week or so after he switches to normal soap, and that will help restore the normal skin flora. If he hates yogurt, go back to the health food store and get him some acidophilus capsules. (They may or may not be in the refrigerator at the store).

Getting rid of "pro-fungus" soap and taking chlorophyll should get him smelling sweet within a week.

Good luck -- and thanks for being a good brother to him!

You definitely should get him to a dr. Check out webMD to see what a symptom of giving off an odor might be linked to.

You need to check him for a poison filled tentacle. If he has one it is most likely on the back of his neck right at or slightly above the hair line. If you find one of these tentacles, I would recommend running as fast and far a possible. The guy you know as your brother is actually the spawn of Satan.
