First, the song has to be timeless. It has to stand the test of time and even cross over generations. Personally, my favorite is summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh prince (Will Smith). I know it's cheesy but it still reminds me of high school and I still hear it every once in a while from the younger kids.

The song also puts you in the mood for summer. It reminds me of the excitement you get once it hits and kicking back like nothing matters. Since the song is about summer, it brings up the things that were really important to us growing up and looking towards the summer. When you get older, you can't do those things as much anymore. So the song makes me smile about the past and for once I listen to the words.

that's me. I don't expect the best answer. I just think everyone is going to have a song that links them back to a memory of growing up in the summer. That seems to be mine around the high school/junior high years.

I think for a song to become a summertime classic it just has to apply to the generation of listeners. Right now it'd be something upbeat, energetic and positive. Something that makes you think "Hey, it summer! Let's have some fun!" It'd be a song that makes you want to go out in the sun when you hear it. All the song requires for this is to make you feel good, so really any song can be a summertime classic, all depends on the listener. Songs like what Tim P mentioned above me are a good example or "Sheryl Crow - Soak Up The Sun" anything like those. One of my favorite up beat summery songs is "Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows" as it reminds me of summer and summer is the best time to find love in my opinon. Also "Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever" and you'll notice all these songs are fairly upbeat for most of their duration.

A summer song needs to reflect the feelings of the teen population since they seem to be the ones to make or break a song... People are saying DJ Jazzy and the Fresh Prince - Summertime but that is what was popular then. This summer I see kids driving around listening to Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend. I think it is awful but it has a catchy beat and easy words so you can sing along while you are driving to the beach.

My favourite song for the summertime is a classic that me and my friends would always sing at the last day of school before summer vacation when we were younger. That's right the song is "No more pencils,no more books,no more teachers dirty looks. When the teacher rings the bell, drop those books and run like hell".I wonder if any kids today still sing that song lol.

A summer classic is a song that you can play anytime. "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince is one example. Most of the classics are songs about summer, things you do in the summer and songs that no matter when it's played, you will always bump to it.If it's gotta a crazy beat, that helps too.

for me I in terms of criteria I would say it should be up beat, also;it cannot be overtly abnoxious or negative and it absolutely has to chill you out or energize you either or!,Im only speaking of rock music/punk music/death metal and all the related counter part catagories. If i was to make an exception to my usual choices it might be perhaps, PERHAPS!! some kind of house tune though it would have to be an exceptionally good house tune .Presently I 'm into A.f.I:summer shudder actually though any song by AFI could easily qualify as a great summer tune, someothers that come to mind for this year off the top of my head would be KORN:Comming Undune which is def another awsome certified all time summer tune then we have Deadsy:winners,Razor love,My entire list of equally good summer songs would be incredibly massive in length so there ya have it-ROCK ON CANADA!

I think songs that have a light topic are great for summer. When they are fast paced, catchy right away, and not too simple, I think they become classics. No one great summer song comes to mind as being my favourite. There are several I like.

I agree. A song has to be bright and fun. It doesn't necessarily have to mention summer per say but it should make you feel warm and sunny. Like you do in the summer. One that does it for me is "Soak Up The Sun" by Sheryl Crowe. Another one is "Mr. Jones" by The Counting Crows.

Happy Summer All!! and remember Drive safe, Drive SOBER!!!

A summer song has to be a cool, slightly upbeat and yet relaxes you all in one. The ultimate summer song is "When the Night Feels My Song" by Bedouin Soundclash, this song has it all!
