if i tried to boot from a cd drive without a hard drive, yould that give me a failure to boot... check cable...

error message?

OK... i do have a windows xp cd in there but it still gives me the error, like it couldnt read the cd.

i also have the cd drive to boot first then the hard drive

Bad disc drive? Bad CD? If its doing that all the time then make sure you DO have your Hard Disc set to boot eventually. And not completely disabled :-)

This failioure may have had happened if the hard drive isnt recognized by the bios or if the computer had problems booting the cd rom.

Yes, if the computer did not successfully boot off the CD, then it would give you the Disk failure message.

Yes, there is a section in the BIOS that looks at the hardware. It is usually set to "Halt" on all errors other then keyboard. So when it doesn't see a hard drive it stops and gives you an error message.
