It depends on the species. Many fish change gender one or more times in their life. With some species it happens in a specific time in their lives, for others the dominant female becomes male when no male is present. Within a given species, the coloration is often a clue to the current age and gender of the fish, but the juveniles of one species can resemble the adults of another species, so it takes a fair bit of knowledge to answer for a given fish.
