Because the US government doesn't care. Never have. So we destroyed them and are now leaving them on their own in lands that for many tribes weren't their original homes.

(1) There is no "we" in this matter as several different European groups colonized America. Others, like Black Americans, were brought against their will. What about all the recently arrived immigrants? why should they be made responsible for atrocities and injustices that neither they nor their ancestors commited.
(2) There was no such thing as an American Indian then. The so-called "indians" consisted of a smorgasbord of tribes and clans. they were at war with each other and did not consider themselves to be part of the same group. Much like Jewish settlement in the Arab territories presently nostalgically known as Palestine, European colonization helped forge the American Indian race (Assuming such a thing truly exists today).
(3) So what if we invaded their country? Wasn't that the way of the world back then? Logically, you can't take today's moral standards and apply them to past events.
(4) We've already given them reservations lands and a pension. They have also been very shrewed in using the tax-exempt status of reservations to undercut American business for the same of various goods and services, from which they've made plenty of money. Lest I mention the phenomenon of casino gambling on reservations.
(5) I, personally, don't like them. I find them very mean and nativistic. What's more, they, like every other racial or ethnic group in this country, are racist against Black people.
GET OVER IT!!!

there are some very interesting comments here. but look at the Indigenous People who are not supported by casinos and gambling halls. there are even certain Indigenous Tribes who have yet to be recognized as Sovereign by the United States Government.
Along with this also take a look at how little respect the United States has given to certain areas which Indigenous Native People consider Sacred. do some research on Bear Butte area.

The federal government takes very good care of American Indians. The question should be, why don't most Indian Tribes reconize all of their tribal members instead of only a select few?

Imagine this; You are a young pioneer woman who 'invaded their country'. They have tortured and butchered your husband and children and thrown some choice body parts in the cooking kettle and force you to eat the flesh of your own family.
Would you still feel sorry for them?
If you think this didn't happen, you don't know much about history. They not only did this to White 'invaders', they did it to other tribes as well.
Cry me a river.

The American Indians need to detribe and become Americans and pay taxes and give up the land on the reservation....sell it and be absorbed into the general population. Then they become eligible to become more a part of society. I am not sure if they can otherwise. Quakers and Amish are the same way...they have their own societies.

Are you kidding? The American Indians might have been raped by America long ago but no longer my friend. The Tribal Chief of the Soboba Indians as well as the Tribal Chief for San Manuel are close family friends of mine. They are well taken care of along with their people. They are richer then I will ever be. The United States government has let them practically have a monopoly of the gambling trade. Allot of the Indians are getting into heavy drug use as well as alcoholism because of their unlimited income not because of our government. Get your facts straight.

We do take care of them.
They can get free land on a reservation, gov will build them a house on said land.
There are many scholorships for native americans.
And with all the casinos popping up they are banking big time.

I guess 'we' implies a collective...?
In what way shall 'we' do this? And why should this particulare group get preferential treatment over 'all others' that neither 'I', 'You' or (most probably) no one 'we' have ever personally done anything to or against?
If I am at fault, I shall do my best to rectify the situation. Please DO let me know what I have done wrong.
However, I shall not be held accountable for the 'sins' of another, regardless of artificial boundaries.

Indigenous Americans have been marginalized for centuries and are considered by many to be relics at best and inconsequential at worst. Our education system and general cultural promotes this view of these peoples, and so each new generation maintains the view of the relic indigenous.
