"Stargate" is a great one, its got a great little twist on some wonders of our world. James Spader and Kurt Russell are in it.
Enemy Mine ~ From 1985 comes this change of pace in Alien movies starring Dennis Quaid as a human stranded on another planet who meets up with an Alien also stranded there played by Louis Gossett Jr. This alien happens to belong to the race he was fighting when he got stranded. The two have to learn to get along to survive.
Dreamcatcher - This is a really good movie too. It's about four friends who help a strange young boy that's being picked on and their lives are forever changed because of it
Contact- The movie deals less with the actual aliens themselves, and more with humans and the effort involved with trying to interpret the message the aliens sent. It has a great casht...John Hurt, Matthew McConaughey, Angela Basset, James Woods, Tom Skerritt, and Rob Lowe.
Fire in the Sky-- based on a true story that supposedly happened November 5, 1975 in Snowflake, Arizona, its got a cast of DB sweeney, Robert Patrick, Henry Thomas, Jamers Garner.
and also Try out Cacoon-- Its been a long time since Ive seen this movie, but what I remember of it... A group of old people jump in this pool that has this cacoon at the bottom of the pool makes them feel young again. I remember getting a lot of recognition and it was a great film.
Well hope this helps.

You must check out "Fire in the Sky"
A group of men who were clearing bush for the government arrive back in town, claiming that their friend was abducted by aliens. Nobody believes them, and despite a lack of motive and no evidence of foul play, their friends' disappearance is treated as murder.
This film recreates the strange events which happened November 5, 1975 in the town Snowflake, Arizona. Travis Walton works as a logger in the woods. When he and his colleagues drive home after work, they encounter an UFO. For the next five days Travis disappears and his colleagues are accused of murder. When he reappears, first he didn't remember that he was gone, but in time the terrible memories come back

...here's an extremely rare one to look for, an interesting and compelling, albeit cheezy cinematic oddity, about human discovery, interactment and contact of/with extraterrestials, and the subject matter lies firmly within supposedly actual events and situations (i.e., 'Area 51', and such).
The film is "Hanger 18", from 1980, and it stars Darren McGavin (Ralphie's dad in "A Christmas Story") and Robert Vaughn.
I hadn't thought that the film had been released on DVD yet (I've had the VHS tape for years), but www.Amazon.com apparently says otherwise.
.....most interesting; check it out!!!
...another interesting raritiy, regarding the supposed true story of a middle aged couple supposedly abducted by aliens, is the 1975 multiple-part T.V. movie, "The UFO Incident"; it starred James Earl Jones & Bernard Hughes, and it accounted, via hypnosis and lie detectors, the reported abduction, then the poking, proding and experimenting/testing of the couple.
Regrettfully, the film has never seen released on VHS tape, nor DVD, but occasionally, AMC will show the film in it's entirety. Look out for it!!!

"Common sense". Hmmmmmm.....
Well, you have like "K-Pac" or "Brother From Another Planet", movies that go beyond the standard bizarre Alien approach.
I don't know how you feel about "The MAn Who Fell To Earth", though
