I have always wondered that.

There was more than one occasion where Ron made a rude hand gesture. In Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Mrs. Weasley caught him making one of the rude hand gestures and she said that if she saw him doing that again, she'll jinx his figures together. That time I think he was doing the reverse peace symbol with the two fingers.

The other time Ron made rude hand gestures was when he was talking about Malfoy not being a Prefect anymore. He said that they passed by the compartment he was in and Malfoy did nothing but the hand gesture and Ron showed Harry what it was. I think that time was the middle finger. He did it again in the same scene after saying that it was normal for Malfoy to do that, but not normal for him to do nothing else but that.

Probably middle finger up.

EDIT: We DO use the middle finger in England, where I am from, thanks very much!! Two fingers as well, yes. But just the middle is considered ruder. It is often accompanied by the word "swivel".

In conclusion then, alexzondra, it is sticking up either the first two fingers OR the middle finger! Depending on HOW rude you think Ron is being. Two fingers is a bit eighties, imo...

Take your right hand and make the peace symbol (first two fingers in a "V" shape). Now start with your arm at your side and raise it up to eye level really hard really fast. At the same time, stick out your tounge and make the "thhhbbbbbrrr" sound (the raspberry)

The basically British way of saying "F you" or "Up yours"...you get the idea.

wait till the next book comes out and u will see. I think it was
nothing rude at all but something to say to ron. and for our silly
American friends they do not use the middle finger in England
they use the first 2 fingers with the same meaning! You Americans really should get out more often!

It would have been a reverse peace sign, with the back of the hand facing out rather then in, this is England version of America's middle finger.

I'm guessing that J.K. Rowling was trying to say, in a nice way, that Ron was "flipping off" someone. Lol. Middle finger, that is.

I'm guessing Ron stuck up his middle finger.

Usually an extension of the middle finger.

Definitely not the middle finger.. Ever heard of the V sign people? And I don't mean the peace sign...

I guess you also imagine Harry has an American accent. hehe.
