Every state gets one vote for each congressman. When a candidate wins the state, they get all of the electoral votes. (so if the vote in Vermont is 100,000 to 99,999, the candidate with 100,000 gets all of the electoral votes. The electoral college meets and votes for President.

The founders picked this method because they felt that only the elected people should vote for President, and not directly by the commoners.

Big problem: you can win the popular vote but lose the electoral college (see GWB vs Gore in 2000). Also, when ties happen, it can get messy.

This method does not serve the American people. The best and most scientific approach is to let people vote for their top two or three candidates and then the majority wins. That way, you could vote for Hilary, Obama and Edwards, and Guiliani would get no votes.

Each state gets votes, based on the number of Congressmen from that state. The fewest number is three: two senators and one representative.

The founders wanted to be sure all parts of the country were represented in a general election.

I don't think there are any problems. We have been using the electoral college for 230 years. It has never been challenged.

Yes. The American people are served. If we went by popular vote only, the hot beds of liberal democrats would skew all of the elections. Those hotbeds are California, Massachuttes, New York City and the like.
