Really why would people not be for free health care in America? I love America and wouldn't want to live any where else... but I really would like to see some changes.
I know that taxes would go up... however we already pay a lot for healthcare that doesn't work (or pay for things like... well, cancer treatment)... I would happily pay more taxes if it ment i got a health care system that would... I don't know....care for me!

The one thing i hate about YA is that most people don't read everything that the person who asks the questions writes... I said that I knew taxes would go up!
another thing that bugs me about America is we can't talk about politics without putting eachother down! Grow up and learn to debate w/o insulting people!

retrotrancer: "Its immoral to make someone pay for someone elses health care"!?!?!
Maybe you used the wrong word because what is immoral is allowing people to die so that a incurance co. can make a profit!!!!
If you get cancer or some other deathly illness I bet you they find a way not to pay to heal you! Because how will they afford their boats and oversized houses if they save your life?
It's not just about the poor people who can't afford health care! Its also about all of us that have it... because someday we'll need them and they will find a way not to help us.
Thats immoral.

The truth is MOST Americans do tend to be selfish... They don't care about other people, only themselves.... I'd rather see everyone in America healthy... I'd rather see this country fixing it's self before it tried to fix another country... But I care about the way we are not the way we look... I care about us as a whole... not just myself. We're falling apart in many ways... the only way to fix it is if we really are united... but we aren't, your to worried about you.
I know... "isn't that cute"
I wish more people really gave a s***!

YES! The doctors and the insurance companies.

Well the first thing is you have to stop clouding the issue with the idea of "free" healthcare. Politicians who want to spend your money have a bad habit of saying you get "free" stuff in return.

The real problem with it is, how much money and resources do you lose by sending the money from your paycheck, all the way up to Washington D.C., and then back down to the hospital or doctor's office? The more hands money passes through before it accomplishes its goal, the more you will need.

If universal coverage works so well, the states that support it should institute it immediately! Why wait until you can convince enough states to go along with you? If it works out great, other states will be forced to follow along since all the people and businesses will want to move to where the best system is.

If you want to be the first country to institute medical care for 300,000,000 people all at once, good luck. We'll be in trouble when we realize that is so far beyond the scope of anything that has been done before.

Oh yeah, we complain that health costs are going up, but how much extra demand are we going to put onto the system when everyone is covered and everything is "free?" Will the doctors stop selling uneccessary surgery and uneccessary drugs when their payments are assured?

History also suggests that any government intervention in the medical field leads to increased funding and profits for the drug and insurance companies (well, because the government buys as much service as the people could possibly want!) There are a lot of huge obstacles that need to be addressed before something this massive and expensive is undertaken, and they aren't even part of the debate because of the propoganda involved with "free healthcare" or "universal right to healthcare" etc. Can we vote to have a "universal right to be rich?" Its only slightly more silly..

And when it all comes down to the end, do you want your government to decide what medical treatment you need/deserve? How anyone has that much faith in the government that has treated us so badly, I'll never understand.

Here's the problem with free health care, In England you have the NHS for everybody. However, not all the doctors work under it. As soon as a doctor learns enough to be any good, their off to a private practice. Whats left at the hospitals are rookies, being taught by incompetents. In America we have free legal to any one who needs it, but if you want to stay out of jail, you better hire your own lawyer. What you would have to do the make free health care work is make all the doctors in the country indentured servants. I think you might find some resistance with that idea in the medical community. Free health care looks great from far away, but up close, it stinks. Had Micheal Moore made a fair movie, I'm sure that would have been evident.

It will be the most expensive "free" health care you ever paid. We have the best medical services around becuase we are able to keep government out of it for the most part. Why do you think people from Canada, and Europe come here for elected surgury? They don't want to be placed on a waiting list for 6 months, or have a bureacrat tell them that your cut doesn't constiute an emergency , while your bleeding profusely on the floor.
Have you ever stepped foot into a county or federal hospital? Obviously not! The differences between a private hospital say Methodist or the memorial healthcare sytem and the government run hospital is like night and day!

You are willing to let the people who can't even deliver your mail correctly handle your healthcare? That is crazy! Did you know that only .27 cents of every dollar gets to a welfare recipient? The rest is lost in government red tape and bureacracy. And you are willing to let our government handle even more of your money? You should just hand over your paycheck and tell them "Take what you need, and then give me the rest."
No one now is denied healthcare. If you have a problem and don't have insurance, go to your county hospital, thats why they are there! If you have an emergency, go to ANY hospital, they are forced by law to handle all emergencies cases. They may stablize you and send you to the county, but they cannot turn you away and not treat you.
We enjoy the benefits of modern techniques and becuase private enterprise is willing to take on and fund research, however, if government takes over, what incentive would say Memorial have in spear heading angioplasties techniques to save government money?
If government took over healthcare, employers would no longer carry health insurance for it employees. Why would it? Health care insurance is not required, it is a tool to get and retain quaility employee's. But government healthcare would ruin that, and if you think the DMV lines were long, just wait!

pantagruel- Has no concept of what he is talking about. People here are not dying in emergency rooms from injuries via lack of insurance! This is Total B.S.! You cannot be turned away if you have an legitimate emergency. No hospital (private or not) can refuse emergancy treatment, its law! Proponets for government sponsored healthcare pitch this lie all the time!

Ok, let me break this down for those of you who are slow:

1) Nothing is free, your taxes will start up a never ending increase as the government has to find new ways to pay for the endless number of disease doctors encounter and growing bureacracy.

2) What make you think the government can do anything correctly without a huge bureacracy delaying treatment (Canada's example). Maybe it will run like our post office, your health care will be slow to come and over priced (still).

3) Capitalism BUILT this country, not the government. I challenge a single government entity (excluding military) that would not run better or that doesn't have a private sector equal that works better.

HEALTH CARE IS NOT AN ENTILTEMENT. Currently a hopsital cannot turn a patient away that needs immediate asssitants. Beyond that why does anyone deserve healthcare? Cancel the cable, stop smoking and forget Mcy D's for a couple months and pay for health care. The only people that we should care for are those who are completely unable to care for themselves (however, I would bet a large sum of cash that if you remove medicare another private organization would find a way to help. Like Ronald McDonald House.)

I don't agree with these people, but here is the reason:

There IS no free health care. It is NOT free. Someone is going to pay for it. "Free" heath care means that our tax money goes toward helping people get health care, and likely will result in higher taxes. That is not "free." And honestly, a LOT of people are selfish enough to not want to spend their hard earned money helping people with no health insurance. The insinuation is often that these people would HAVE insurance if they were not lazy or undeserving, but the real reason is simple selfishiness and ignorant fear of socialism.

I'm with you. I'd be happy to pay more taxes if it will help those in need get the medical care they deserve, especially for children. It is true that the quality of the health care would probably be fairly poor due to the high costs, a "problem" brought up by opponents, but that doesn't mean the rest of us can't pay for better health insurance. That is what happens in places like the U.K. Everyone gets health insurance, and those with money get BETTER health insurance. Lousy health insurance for the poor is better than NO health insurance.

Oh well. Let the excuses begin.

There is no such thing as free. It is only a question of who pays & where the money comes from. If govt were to take over the health care industry, taxes would jump by about 75%. All in favor?

great? give health care controls over to an organization that has done so well being in control of other potentially money-making organizations? Do you know that because of the government there are coffee makers in military bases all over the country that were sold for 2000 dollars? I'm not even talking about the fancy cuppaccino machines, i'm talking about the ones that i have for 20 bucks.

We used to have 'private fire dept. here in the U.S.,BUT IT PROVED TO BE A TOTAL FAILURE ! If your house was on fire, the fire dept. would come to put it out ,only if you were paid up on you dues. If you weren't ,they'd let it burn to the ground ! The problems with that were many ! For one,the neighbors house would be in danger of burning, and that would be a threat to the entire town !
The same thing is now happening with the 'private' health ins. We see more and more sickness and disease going untreated, and affecting the entire community. If a person is diagnosed early with a health condition,it's far cheaper to treat them right away, than it is to treat them when they show up in the Emergency Room of your local hospital ! Only in America, does a person bleed to death on the floor of a modern hospital from the lack of money ! We pay for their care one way or the other. When jobs go out of the country because it costs businesses so much to provide even the most basic ins. for their employees,it hurts our economy. 1,700$ of the cost of making an auto in America, is the cost of the ins. for the employees who make that car. So you see that you're paying for health care one way, or the other ! The only question is will the ins. co. still make a profit from our illnesses,or will we have a fair and progressive system that makes our country stronger!

There's no such thing as free health care. Somebody has to pay. It's immoral to force one person to pay money against their will to cover another person's medical expenses. If someone wants to drive with no seat belt, or smoke, or do drugs, or injure themselves on an ATV, or gets drunk and cuts their own wrists...

why am I obligated to write a check?
