Turn on the computer and begin to repeatedly press the F8 key. Just before the Windows logo would normally appear, you should get a screen which offers you "VGA Mode" as a boot option.

The same way you boot a computer in to safe mode.

Just hit the "F8" key a bunch of times right before the "Windows XP" logo pops up while booting.
