I have a wireless router and have one desktop (wired connection) and use a laptop for work (wireless). Everything works great. My question is whether, when both systems are on, can my workplace or company 'see' or access what is being done on my personal desktop? Both machines use a firewall but are online on the same router. THANKS!

To provide more detail per one answer below, it is in fact a large company with a very large IT department. If it is illegal for them to 'spy' on my home PC, however, I think that takes care of my worry.

If i understand right. Your laptop is from your business and you have a personal desktop at home and are wondering if you have the laptop running than can your business see what you're doing on your personal desktop. If that's the question, then the answer is no. It is possible but for your company to remotley access their laptop and then use it's connection to the network to access your desktop is illegal and very very complicated.

Nothing in the sharing of a router or a wireless connection allows another person to unwillingly see what you are doing. But there are all kinds of programs that could be used to deliberately seeing what you are doing - from keyloggers to remote access software, to packet sniffers. But 99% of companies would not have a clue how to use - or want to use - such software.

Unless it is a large company with its own servers and an IT department full of geeks, they are more likely to discover what you are doing by just glancing over your shoulder and seeing something on your screen then they are through a router or wireless connection.

No they cannot.

The laptop and your home computer would have to be in the same work group or domain just to share files and folders. Even if they were in the same work group or domain your work place would not be able to see your activities on your home computer.

That type of information is given through log files that are stored withing group policy on the computer or server that hosts the domain, mail server, etc...

This is possible with third party software though, but very unlikely your company is into that sort of thing.

Not really, but it depends on the setup is the router being used as a WAP (wireless access point) or do you have a wireless network, do you have printer and file sharing turned on, if you are using it as just a WAP then no.
