John - Get your facts straight, my friend. Congress did not VOTE to go to war. There was no declaration of war. Congress voted to give Bush the authority to disarm Saddam Hussein if he failed to comply with weapon inspectors. What is happening now in Iraq is not a war, but an extended babysitting session between two religious factions that costs us American lives, political clout, and billions of dollars (MY DOLLARS) that could be better put to use at home.

Adam - Please don't make me think that you are one of these misinformed sheep who still believe that Iraq has nuclear weapons and somehow the capability to use one here in America...

Brian - Who said anything about leaving troops over there? They can come home. They are supposed to provide national DEFENSE. Not preemptive OFFENSE.

Correction, hundreds of billions, not billions. Here's the real kicker to me, mark my words. When all is said and done about Iraq, we're going to leave and whatever happens, happens. There will be fighting, there will be chaos, there will be a grab for power from competing factions. It will be just like it is now without American soldiers there to be killed. The Iraqi people and their neighbors will eventually calm down, terrorism won't be defeated and all those lives lost and hundreds of billions that were spent, will all be in vain. I wish I could say it would be for naught but the truth is, everyone involved lost and many paid the ultimate loss. Our images is destroyed in the eyes of many in the world and our own country is torn by this issue. I would rather have my tax dollars going to help Americans.

That's why we have a representative form of government, there will always be something that someone doesn't like, whether it's a war or a program to give out free condoms or needles.
The greatness of the USA depends on our supporting one another for the common good of everyone, not just you and not just me. We vote people into or out of office, in a sense, we have "bloodless" revolutions and we get what we vote for, like it or not.
We shout, we scream, we vex, rant, rave and carry protest signs but in the end, it's the ballot box that's the great modifier.
We live in an imperfect world but until we can come up with a better system, the present one is still the best one around or we would not be the most prosperous economy in the history of the World.
Utopia is a myth. Get used to it.

Probably because the Democrats voted for the war too. You might also check the constitution, it mentions a little thing about the army. Honestly, at the federal level, all we need is defense, post offices, roads, and dispute resolution for inter-state commerce.
ANYTHING else is allowed, at the state and local level. Universal Healthcare works good in Sweden, or France, or Canada, but you might notice they don't try to run all of Europe in one medical program. A similar approach would work better in America than one system operated from D.C. down.
Ok well maybe you didn't realize a war was coming, and maybe the Democrats didn't realize they were voting in favor of it, but I kinda noticed it was on its way when we put 4 aircraft carriers in the gulf and started asking everyone what they thought about getting rid of Saddam. Sorry no one spelled it out for ya.

I don't see you forcing any of those bases in your state to close or declining Help from the National Guard when needed .. I guess your tax dollars are being put to good use as far as the military aspect.. Besides I think you're much happier letting someone else tote that M-16 - worth those tax $$ huh..... Meanwhile, I pay for my health care and don't benefit from the "welfare" I mean social programs.. But neither do I attack those that honestly need these programs ...

Right. Not to mention the fact that the war cost many times over what we are spending on health care or social programs. Not to mention education!

LOL I'm a leftie...while you're at it, no one asked me when they took my 30% of taxes if it was OK to fight a senseless war. I'd rather it went to healthcare and education

Aw, you don't support the war. That's just too bad. Would you leave our soldiers over there with nothing? Everyone's tax dollars go to causes people don't agree with. Grow up and learn to live with it.
