Babies like attention, and the occasional change of scenery.
When someone other than mother is holding the baby, the child now has a BETTER VIEW of his favorite person!

You're not doing anything wrong. Your little guy is 4 months old. At that age, babies don't recognize that there is a different between them and their moms. It sounds like you're with him most of the time, which is normal, natural and healthy. As far as he's concerned, the two of you are one person. So, of course, he's not going to react to you as he would to another person...you're familiar, you're HIM, as far as he's concerned.
Moms have a tough road because we do so much for our children and get so little credit. But don't worry: it's not a problem, it's just the way babies work.
If you're getting burned out about him crying and fussing in church, however, see if Daddy will take care of him during that time, so you can attend church by yourself. It's amazing how much more clearly you can think when you're not worrying about the little one every minute. Another alternative is to see if the church offers childcare during its services. Kind of a Sunday school for tots. It's worth asking, at least.
I hope this helps. Good luck--

No your son doesn't hate you.
He is a little person with moods, emotions, feelings and even independence.
There was a wonderful article in the WT several years ago about
"Who rules the family?" It had a picture of a toddler making a fuss and the parents giving in.
Don't worry, this is a phrase and he will grow out of it.
Just keep proving loving discipline.

your baby will pick up and react to your emotions...at church when he starts getting whiney you may be stressing out thinking about this situation. Baby will pick up on that stress/uneasyness/irritation and will continue to get more worked up. A stranger at church A) doesn 't have the stress of being a new mother and B) gives baby something new to look at and check out. YOU ARE NOT A BAD MOTHER. Babies just do stuff because they are babies and for no other reason.

Sometimes babies just need a change of scenery. Sometimes my baby won't smile for me no matter what I do, then my husband walks in and his face lights up.
Nothing personal, it's just like if you were talking to your mom and someone you haven't seen awhile walks up you smile at them!

It's the change of care giver that he's smiling about. You aren't doing anything wrong :)
You are not a bad mom. Perhaps he just likes seeing you from a different angle?

it's ok. he is just being fussy. they will do that anywhere. i have two and they did that with me too. you are not a bad mother and you are doing things right. don't let people get to you. you just keep taking care of him and give him what he needs.

It only means that your baby wanted some attention. Don't take it personally.

He knows you're going to a false church controlled by a masonic order controlled by the Knights Templar of the York Rite. Look around at the symbolism on the church. He is upset because he knows this. He's crying because he knows you'll drag him around knocking on doors soon. He's crying because if he needs a blood transfusion he knows he's screwed.
