Some students get confused with negative #'s so a number line seems to aid in that..

for example: 3-7 = -4

writing out a # line helps students understand and VISUALIZE their answer.

It's a linear visualization that aids in their understanding.

Number lines are good to help you understand absolute value and negative and positive numbers. But they could be ueful in solving only the most elementary linear equations such as x+5 = 11. You could start at 5 on the number line and count 6 places to get to 11 so the solution is x =6. But it's much easier to just subtract 11-5 and get 6, don't you think? They may also be helpful in understanding domains.

They would be of no value in solving complex equations.
