Yes. Maybe you look more professional and knowledgeable than the real employees look.

Sometimes, one place in particular has a dress code of white shirt and black pants which I happen to wear often. One customer actually thought I worked there and got snotty with me when she asked me a question. I used a few choice words with her and magically she was extremely apologetic.
I got a cheap thrill out of chewing her out without worrying about repercussions. Man did she apologize profusely

All the time!
it can get really annoying. I was in a big electronics store last week. Jeans, t-shirt, long hair loose, not tied back neatly and i still got asked!
do you have experience workig in retail?
My only guess as to the reason is that I'm very familier with the retail world (worked in retail for over a decade (not anymore thankfully)) and I guess people sense that. Maybe. I dunno.

Ocassionally. I think it's because the shoppers can't find the actual store employees anywhere; so they ask anyone they see in the store.

yes, it isn't because of what you wear, it is your confidence, you act as though you belong there and are comfortable, people tend to assume therefore you must work there.

next time you may want to dress differently so you don't look like one of the slack-jawed cretins that shop where you shop.
