I have basically deleted all of the programs that didn't come with the computer, but still there is no space. Can I delete the windows backup utility(whatever that is), or will that ruin everything?

There are some good tools that Windows offers for cleaning up your disk.

If you go to Start || All Programs || Accessories || System Tools || Disk Clean Up (Windows XP commands)

This will clean up some temp files and other things on the computer. You can also do a disk defrag on the system.

If this doesn't help you can empty your internet cache manually.

Open your system drive, usually C:\ and choose Tools in the file menu and go to View and click show hidden files and folders. Then map down to the
C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Change the view to thumbnails and delete the contents of this folder. Doing this generally clears out all cookies also so you will have to sign back into email accounts and/or web sites again, because this will delete the files that holds that auto sign in information.

and look through

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Temp ~ don't delete everything in here, but there are some files you will see like the pictures that you can delete.

You can also compress your entire hard drive by right clicking on it and choosing properites, on the general tab choose compress drive to save disk space.

Just some suggestions hope this helped.

The windows back up lets make a backup of your files to a disk. Deleting that wont give you that much extra space. Your best bet is to buy a external hard drive that plugs int your USB port. For about a $100 you can get a extra 160 GB. It sounds like you need that.

Install a second hard drive. That should give you all of the storage space that you could ever want.

first of all
you go to drive property > disk clean up
if that workd for you than its fine...

if that doesnt work....
try to empty your temp directory in windows folder

if that doesnt then
turn off system restore.....
that will give you space back about 1 gb or so....
but you will loose advantage of system restore
though it will not effect your system....

and still low space thn dear time to buy a new one....

Did you remove your temporary files?

What is filling it up? Pictures, music, something else?
