In a situation like you're describing, back when I was still married, my ex made me go next door and have a chat with the little man. I didn't want to, but afterward, I was glad that I had. When I was over there, I let him know that I would be paying attention and that if I had any reason to, I would be calling the cops. (Sometimes the best responses are the most difficult ones to make.)

my first action that i would really feel annoyed.....and try to cheer up the boy because it isnt nice that his mum get punched and kicked infront of his eyes
