Wry neck is actually a symptom of several problems, not a disease itself. The most common diseases that cause it are ear infections (sometimes caused by ear mites) and E. cuniculi which is a parasite that affects the nervous system. Injected (not oral!) penicillin can help, although there are a number of oral antibiotics that have also been used successfully. E. cuniculi needs to be treated with an appropriate wormer such as fenbendazole.

The best way to prevent it is to simply take good care of your rabbits. This won't always help, as E. cuniculi can lurk in the rabbit's body for years waiting for an immune system problem to allow it to grow.

Wry Neck In Rabbits

Wry neck is normally caused by too much of a build up of ammonia in the rabbit cage. It normally happens to young rabbits the most. The best solution is to provide better ventilation to you rabbits.

When a rabbit has wry neck they will normally tilt their head to the side.

Be careful not to confuse wry neck with an inner ear infection. Rabbits with an inner ear infection will also tilt their head to the side. Inner ear infections normally occur after a rabbit has a cold. That's why it's important to treat a cold pretty soon. An inner ear infection can also be detected by feeling the base of the ears. A rabbit with an inner ear infection will normally feel warmer around the base of the ears than normal. An inner ear infection needs treated with an antibiotic such as pennicillin since it is an infection.

Sometimes it can also be confused with ear mites because ear mites can sometimes, not always, cause a rabbit to tilt its head. Ear mites are normally also associated with fur mites and appear as black looking scabs down inside the ears. Ear mites can be treated by spraying a little WD-40 down into the ears to suffocate the ear mites then let the rabbit shake them out. A shot of ivermectin will also help.

Usually when a rabbit has wry neck it is due to an ear infection. Im not certain why she is getting them, but the best thing to do to be on the safe side is to talk to your vet about it. Ear infections cause a rabbits balance to go bad, and from what you are describing, it sounds like an ear infection. So, talk to your vet, and talk about treatments and what you could do to possibly stop this. Good luck!

Penicillin should cure it and to prevent it keep the infected one away from the others and clean your hands after touching the sick one. also clean out your barn, amonia can cause it.
