My 4th pregnancy had several complications and I ended up having 12 ultrasounds throughout the entire pregnancy. My pregnancy was a surprise to us since we conceived when I had been taking birth control pills for 11 years. It's a long story, but when my doctor discovered that my stomach problems were not caused by Irritable Bowel Syndrome but by pregnancy, I was already 17 weeks along. My first ultrasound was to determine my due date since I had been having periods while taking the birth control pills. I was 38 and developed Gestational Diabetes so I was considered high risk. I had another ultrasound about 6 weeks after my first just to make sure everything was still going fine. At 32 weeks I began weekly appointments that involved a non-stress test, an ultrasound, an appointment with the OB and an appointment with the dietitian. She wasn't born until I was 41 weeks so I had 10 weeks in a row with an ultrasound every Friday. My doctors and the technicians assured me that an ultrasound performed for medical reasons by trained technicians poses no risk to a developing baby or to mom. There are some concerns with a growing business that does ultrasounds strictly for entertainment. These companies take ultrasounds for the purpose of producing pictures and videos to sell to parents-to-be. While there is no apparent danger to the baby with these ultrasounds it does represent a mis-use of the technology which is intended for diagnostic reasons. ADDED: Just to ease any concerns, ultrasounds, also known as sonograms, use high frequency sound waves and no radiation is involved at all. An ultrasound is not like an x-ray other than they are both used to view what is going on internally.

I had preeclampsia twice, and had at least weekly biophysical profiles and non-stress tests done in both of those pregnancies for the last 8 weeks. (Both kids weredelivered early, so this was, say, week 29 or 30 on...)
My older child failed a bio-physical profile, and they had to do an extended ultrasound exam with a transvaginal component to make sure she was really fine. And I was evaluated for a gallbladder problem, too, during that pregnancy.
My younger child never responded well in the non-stress tests, even with juice or soda or granola bars. So they often looked at her more than once a week, just to make sure she was doing OK and getting enough oxygen. I also had an early ultrasound done with that younger child because they couldn't find her heartbeat once.
Plus, they both had routine 20 week ultrasound surveys done.
And they were both born via C-section (one emergency, and one scheduled), so I think a quick ultrasound was done there, too, before the incisions were made.
I bet, when all's said and done, they used ultrasound on my oldest at least ten times, and my youngest many more. The OB said that there's no documented risk with ultrasound, and even if there WERE, the risk of not spotting a developing problem, given my symptoms and history, was much more significant than anything caused by repeated, multiple exposures to ultrasound.
Both kids, despite problematic pregnancies, were born with nothing more significant than jaundice, and they're fine today.

I had many ultrasounds with my son - probably 20. He had a kidney defect and I have an underactive thyroid and PCOS so they had to keep a close eye on things. Ultrasounds are NOT bad for the baby. Don't worry. Enjoy the pictures and make a scrapbook.

I had a whole lot (6-7) of ultrasounds with my second child... I had too much water! Anyhow my son is fine he is 4 now and very spoiled, but I dont think that had anything to do with the ultrasounds :) Good luck and congrats!

Don't worry. It is totally safe. I had many, many ultrasounds due to a blood clot while 26 weeks along. They did a ultrasound at every visit to make sure my daughter was fine. She was born completely healthy and normal.

I had one once a month (every visit) until about 6 months, then once every 2 weeks, then about 8 months along, once a week. You'll be fine. The they hurt the baby in any way, mine wouldn't be nearly as smart as he is, and he's the head of his class. No worries!

ultrasounds do not in anyway hurt the baby. the ultrasound is just that sound. it is just sound waves that neither we or the baby can hear. they are just reading basically the echo. its fine don't worry enjoy seeing your baby. i had about 8 when i was pregnant with my son and he is fine.
