In almost any definition of what defines a conservative, a smaller government is listed usually in the top 5. Do you think the current conservative President has delivered on that very important conservative benchmark.

I think the biggest part of GW Bush's spending has been on the war. A strong military is another conservative ideal. He has cut taxes and though he has in some ways increased the size of government I think the increase is far smaller than what would have or will be created if there is a liberal democrat in the office.

You would have to define an issue for me to answer this. For instance, there is smaller government involvement in business than was the case before dubya. Military spending however, has increased. That's what's wrong with politics today. Everybody thinks that this concept defines a conservative and that concept defines a liberal and on and on and on. When will you folks just discuss issues and stop placing people in this camp or that?

The last 3 conservative presidents (Reagan, Bush Sr., and now little Bush) all preached small government and all have out done the other in the creation of bigger and bigger, record setting size of the federal government. That promise goes back to the early 60s conservatives like Goldwater. The new modern neo-cons obvious are still talking the talking but the evidence of their actions show it is merely lip service.

GW Bush is a Republican, not a conservative. Gerald Ford was the last conservative to hold the office of the presidency. Ronald Reagan was the very first, full fledged, neoconservative to hold the office.

Reagan, as all neo-cons, supported big government, huge deficits, power and money for the rich, poverty and squander for the poor, and pure disdain for the US labor force. All neo-cons care about is someone who talks tough regardless of the carnage they create in their wake.

the current U.S. government is the largest in the history of this country.

The Republicans SAY that they stand for smaller government, strong defense, family values, fiscal responsibility, and law and order. The last six plus years show that is not really the case any more. The reality is that they have increased the government’s size with the homeland security department, practically broken the military with the war and occupation in Iraq, run up huge debts and bills to China, and now they’re showing how they really feel about law and order (the concept, not the TV show).

Here's my definition of a true conservative. Smaller, less intrusive and fiscally responsible government. Anything else is a bastardization of true conservative. Not social, not christian, just conservative.

Conservative has different meanings depending on it's context just as liberal does.
A FISCAL conservative is for less government/ less spending. A religious conservative is for maintaining the moral values of their religion. Bush is a religious conservative - supposedly - oh hell, I can't say that & not start laughing my *** off! No politician is trust-worthy enough to catergorize as they are all in it for themselves!

Conservatives don't believe in smaller government. They simply dont want to pay taxes for education, health care, social security, job training. And they want less restrictions and regulations on polluting the environment and safety requirements.

Having to fund a war and collect a deficit and having a smaller government are two different animals. GWB is not a Conservative, he is a Republican!
