It's not the best way to handle it, but it's necessarily bad either. It depends on the attitude of the person interviewing you.
Some people want you to be nervous, it shows that you think the position is important. They also may want to see how you operate under pressure, and your willingness to perservere in the face of adversity.
Don't forget the follow up letter thanking them for the interview, and maybe say something about how you hope you conveyed your interest in this job, and you would be happy to discuss this employment opportunity with them further. If you didn't dazzle them with your verbal skills, you can still impress them with your writing abilities.

Everyone is nervous when being interviewed. When it comes down to it just be yourself. Besides sometimes it is one or two things "Who you know" or "What you know". Focus on your best option. Sell yourself with you knowledge of the position. Be friendly and always shake hands. Don't forget to send a thank you e-mail or letter. It could be the deciding factor in your interview. Sometimes if it is up to you and one other person they may say "She was nervous but we got a thank you e-mail and she seems a little more interested in the job than the other candidate. Let's give her a chance."
Good luck on all of your interviews.

Of course it does, it helps to do all those things, and even though you may be so nervous that you do indeed stumble over your own words, they will understand. Interviewers know that sometimes possible candidates will get nervous because they want to make a good impression and are afraid they might mess up. As long as you try to keep your cool and are polite and present yourself as "what they are looking for" I'm sure you will have great chances of getting that job.

It shows the interviewer that your intentions were good. Depending on such other factors as your resume information, your answers to the interviewer's key questions and the urgency of the location's need for someone to fill the position, keeping a pleasant disposition, businesslike handshake and common courtesy are more likely than unlikely to HELP in getting you the job.

I think it would be better to tell them when you walk in that you are very nervous because you want this job badly and you are afraid that you may not get it because of your nerves and hopefully the person will be human and understand and actually appreciate your honesty. The other thing you mentioned you should do anyway as that is just being respectful

All employers know that your going to be nervous. Do your best and do everything you mentioned above. Its there choice if they hire you or not. The best you can do is "try your best". One thing that I learned was to practice in the mirror. I know it sounds dumb but it helps, or find someone to do "mock" interviews with you. One tip that I can tell you is dress professional even if your applying at jack in the box. That helps TREMENDOUSLY!

Everyone is nervous on the interview. The part that sells you are the qualifications you have and your manners.

Absolutely! Good luck!
The same happened to me on my last interview, I was tripping over my tongue, could not think of any intelligent words to toss out, I was like "duh". I felt so lame, BUT I am constantly smiling and super polite. I got the job :)
Smiles are contagious.
