They're probably just playing. If they were outdoor cats; they'd be chasing after prey or running from enemies. Indoors, they need to spend some of that energy, so they'll run for the fun of it.

It just comes over them! Mine used to go bonkers when it was really windy outdoors--and then again, he used to do it just at random. The mind of a cat is inaccessible to humans, so unless he's been into the drinks cabinet, figure it's just One Of Those Days.

My cat used to do that every night...we called it "the night crazies" - he would make a couple rounds of the house at top speed and then attack his scratching post. It was hilarious.
