A router lets you share the connection between multiple computers- that's what they're for.

Without a router, you can only have 1 computer connected at a time, so you'd be unplugging and switching the network cable between your desktop and laptop.

A switch or splitter probably won't work since your Internet Service Provider is only giving out 1 IP address....

You can do it without a router, but you shouldn't for a couple of reasons. First a router provides you with a firewall... a necessary thing for an always on connection like a cable modem. Secondly it allows multiple (usually up to four) wired connections and if it's wireless you can use the laptop that way. Choice is good. Seriously, consumer grade routers are very inexpensive these days and are easy to set up. The advantages far out weigh the cost.

The only way to do this without a router is to set up internet connection sharing on the machine with the modem attached, you then connect the network cards of the machines with a cross-over cable. If your desktop is using it's network card to connect to the modem you will need to install a second network card. You can do all the setup from the network setup wizard. It is a fiddly way to connect and will incur a load penalty on the desktop.

Without using a router? Hmmm...

a) I've heard that there are USB networking rigs available... (networking your laptop to your desktop, then sharing internet resource)

b) realistically, pull the cable on the desktop, and plug it in the laptop.

c) get a router. (assuming you don't have a problem using a router, you just don't HAVE one)

Cheers!

Hi,

It can be done quit easy, its cheap no additional harware needed. But using a router is beter.
Having said that, how to do it without it...

Configure your pc with the external internet connection as ICS server. ICS = Internet Connection Sharing
This setup is sometimes called home-network
Here is a web-sites that explains how to do

http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/ics-install-netxp.asp

It looks hard to do, but it is simple to do...
I have it configured several times and it works fine.

If you need more help/info let me know.

You must use one of the following, a router, a hub, or a network switch. Sorry, that's just the way it is.
