Being obese does not alone affect your ability to have a child. Being obese affects how you ovulate and your hormone levels. Several "obese" people go on to have successful, non-complicated pregnancies.

There are a ton of ways that obese people can become pregnant. One, try charting your basal body temperature and cervical mucus--this will tell you when and if you are ovulating. Two, pee on those ovulation predictor sticks around days 12-18 of your cycle. Three, there are medications you can get to induce ovulation, i.e. clomid. Four, there are medications that you can get to regulate your menstral cycles and possibly resume regular ovulation, i.e. metformin. And finally, there may be problems with progesterone levels once you do ovulate. These levels need to be high enough to support the implantation process. If you do have low progesterone levels, your doc can perscribe progesterone.

I am overweight myself (150+ lbs. overweight still after losing 108 lbs.). So, I understand what you are going through. I have been trying to conceive for 4 months now. My cycles are normal--most of the time--I still get a weird one every now and then.

From personal experience, the best way for an overweight gal to conceive is to start with tracking her basal body temps. This will clue you in to what your body is or is not doing. You can start from there.

So, to answer your question, "Can the morbidly obese conceive a child?" Yes, they can. It may be a little harder and may take a little longer, but it is definetly possible.

Best of luck!

there is a difference between being overweight, obese and morbidly obese. if you are overweight and still have normal periods, then you have a higher likelyhood of conceiving. if you are obese, your periods may be irregular and you will have a lesser chance of conceiving. if you are morbidly obese, your body has so much fat that it is a risk to your life. your periods should have stopped, which means you are not ovulating, which means you have no chance of getting pregnant without medical intervention and lifestyle changes. If your periods are still normal, or even if you get periods, then it is possible to still get pregnant.

yes but it is very difficult and is very bad on an morbidly obese person with a BMI of 30% or higher, and you risk lots of problems like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and eclampsia (high blood pressure) extremly large babies, and more intstances of having a c-section with a longer painfull recovery time to name just a few. my advice would be to loose as much weight as you can and get under 30%BMI before ttc your health and that of your future baby will be much, much healthier and you wont have as many complications. if you cant loose weight natually then check into gastric bypass.

Yes, you can conceive a child when you're obese, but if you have high blood pressure it can be dangerous for you, women with high blood pressure can get eclampsia, which is a seizure disorder followed by bleeding heavily. I had a friend who died of child birth with this disorder.
Your OBGYN can put you on blood pressure meds to control this

Yes. I'm not thin myself, and I carried four pregnancies, three to term. I'm technically morbidly obese myself, and so is my spouse.

I would warn any other morbidly obese woman that her chance of twins is higher. They were my fourth surprise.

While I agree with Lolas answer, you should also be aware that you can be ovulating without a period. I know 3 women who were supposedly in menopause for more than 2 years who can tell ya.

Doctors say no but people have proved them wrong. It's hard on the heart, the mother risks a stroke, and dangerous for diabetics, but nature will prevail.

yup. I saw it on the news. This lady had pains in her stomach and went into the hospital to check it out, only to find out she was giving birth! She was extremely huge and said she never felt different. Weird!
