i've been using NIS for some time now and in general I'm quite satisfied with its performance. The only thing it slows down my internet speed and also it seems to be blocking certain sites from opening. Has anybody experienced this, and will changing to another product like McAfee or Zonealarm remediate tis problem? Thanks for your help!

Personally I hate Norton.
I had it for a year or two and it did the same things.
It was more of a trouble then a help.
Also theres still ways viruses can make there way around Norton easily.
I had it happen to me and once it did...it screwed up my entire computer even more worse.
I had to have the computer redone all over again.
I switched to CA (Etrust EZ Armor) Antivirus and for the past 2 years I havent had any problems.
I would recommend this to anyone. Even the government uses this on some of their computers for protection.

Any protection software including a firewall will slow down your access to the internet. The consequences of not using this protection are clear. Changing to another product will not improve your performance. There is a section of NIS that allows you to list sites to block as well as configure for other restrictions. Spend some time exploring the options. You already have the best, keep it and adjust.

Norton Internet Security is a resource pig and slow things down dramatically. If you use a different Antivirus program like Avast, NOD32 or AVG in conjunction with a firewall, your performance will improve greatly, and you'll get just as good- if not better protection.

Norton 2003-2006 were huge resource hogs that would slow all but top-of-the-line machines down.

Norton 2007 has been completely re-done and now uses a more reasonable amount of computer resources.

Norton is better then other anti virus when it comes to slowing down your computer. All AV software slows down a little. Router is your best bet to avoid firewall issues. If you are into mail in rebates, you can cheap ones online.

I use Norton which does not have firewall. I use router and windows standard firewall for the protection, so far no issues.

I think you should get rid of it.

For a start it uses so so much CPU, it slow everything else down including your Internet
browser.
I use Outpost firewall Pro which all so as a build in spyware scanner.

Also use AVG free and Spybot - Search & Destroy & Ad-Aware SE Personal.

ALL software firewalls are complete sh*t. They will all do the same things and do not really protect you.

Get a router and then you are protected. Linksys is the best. You can get them at staples or comp usa places like that.

I have McAffee and it also does this. I know there is one antivirus which does not do this. I don't remember the name though.
