Listening, possibly nothing said. A shoulder, a hand an arm, a hug, a smile, or not. A little empathy or leave me alone.. You can sense and go with the flow. Job's visitors said nothing for three days until he spoke and then what they said was mostly all wrong. Understanding can be working it through in your own mind from where he is. Your sense of knowing the whole route back is a sermon without a word or few of them. They will work it out when they feel safe. It's a sense of their whole view of life being shattered and a new one has to be rebuilt. I found medication necessary, better prescription than not. Government sponsored Community clinics are usually cheap by income, but some people really balk at the thought. A lot of tact. Their in their own world. You can share it somehow, maybe feel or see it to an extent as you can. When you affirm them in your mind they sense it. "Let all your affairs take place with love." Skip the irrational thoughts, you affirm them more than their picture although contact with the emotions is the only way to work through them. It's a subject in the library, Emotional Intelliegence. it really depends on the person and why he's bitter. i would just help him know that you're a true friend and will always there for him, that'd cheer me up any time. (not like "hey guess what i'm a good friend and i'll always be here for you" but let him know in other ways.)
but that's just me. he's probably different, you know your friend better than any of us do.
