First of all, the period is located on the bottom right of the keyboard, below your right hand. use it. If you really have no clue what the deal is, and you've tried reinstalling things, getting new hardware, etc, then yes, get a technician person to look at it. take it to the store, and see what they say.

No not at all, that's just it you've been using it since 2000, and I bet nothing has been reinstalled. Your computer probably has a lot of disk fragmentation, which can be fixed by using Disk Defragmenter. Also you might want to run check disk, which is a program that will scan your hard driver for errors and fix what it can. These programs can be found by going into my computer right clicking on drive C: going down to properties and once the window pops up go to the Tools tab. Check disk is under Error-checking click on the button next to it check both boxes and click okay restart let it run then when your computer boots up go back to the same window and go to the disk defragmenter under check disk, click it's button and when the Defragmenter loads click the defragment button. This will take some time, but let it run and don't do anything on your computer, it won't hurt it to do so, but it will increase the time it takes to defragment, so it's best left alone. Good luck. P.S.- I wouldn't do a fresh install just yet, that can be drastic and time consuming to say the least, besides it does put your computer through some rigors and your hardware may fail leaving you without a working computer, I would suggest only doing that if your computer starts having errors, and then I would recommend having a technician do it in case something does happen, be sure to ask them to back up your data, if you can't or don't know how.

Sounds like you have done just about everything, but have you checked the "msconfig" utility to see just what is loading with Windows and running in the background. All you really need to start with Windows is your anti virus and firewall. The rest is your choice. The more that boots with Windows the more that is running in the background and using up your system resources.

Click: Start/Run, in the Run box, type "msconfig" without the qoutes and click "Ok". Click the "Startup" tab.
