Carefully. There is no general technique. I have heard of brand new jeans being soaked in bleach to weaken the fabric enough to release the original pigments, laying them out days under the scorching sun, "watering" them with bleach solutions in strategic areas (knees).
There is great danger in permanently damaging the pants and the manufacturers have enough pants to play with. You dont.
