I've never had a driver's license so I've relied upon public transportation all my life so I have no fear of using this system. all one needs to do is be cautious just in case. personal awareness breeds personal safety.

Not much...I always have my fare ready in my hand by the time I reach the bus stop, so I am never fumbling in a purse or wallet.

And ever since I was almost mugged a couple of months ago (nothing to do with the bus, that one), I have stopped carrying my purse with me everywhere, and now just usually have a small wallet (palm sized) that I slip in my pocket to carry. Since I wear loose tops to my thighs, no one can tell I have a wallet on me, so I am no longer a target for casual muggings.

The only people I really object to are the heavy drinkers. They smell even worse than the homeless people, and you are always wondering if YOU are going to get sick from the fumes coming off them.

I took the LIRR and the NYC subways for 10 years during the 1980's. I felt vulnerable sometimes, but never threatened. Vulnerability is a good thing - it keeps you cautious, which is a good thing since it can keep you aware of your surroundings and perhaps keep you out of harms way. Keep necklaces tucked in your sweater, rings with the stones to your palm, and look around, and don't be afraid of offending anyone by switching seats if you feel apprehensive. Trust your gut.

I have taken public transport every day for the last 6 years. And although I am wary, I don't actively worry about this.

Then again, that may be because I am one of the undesirables you mention. The unsavory element, as it were.

I am definitely on guard against would-be robbers just because you have to be safe but I LOVE public transit. I definitely prefer it and it's better for the environment. I tend to get car sick now but I'm fine on the subway/bus. No idea why.
