Security deposit would go towards any unpaid debt or to damages done in the apartment. However, if you pay your rents prior to or at the court appearance, the landlord can't withhold any of it for rents, it can only be held for damages. The landlord will then have to itemize the damages and deduct it from your deposit.
Keep in mind, if you are being evicted, not only will you be held accountable for rent, damages, most of all, legal costs.
If there is anyway to get help, I would do so right away. An eviction will remain on your credit report and makes it difficult to rent elsewhere.
Salvation Army helps out with rent, so does some catholic charities.
I hope this clarifies any questions, you may have.

If someone is evicted, it is usually for non-payment of rents, destruction of property, doing something illegal, or breaking a part of the lease or rental contract. If the property is condemned for structural faults or by eminent domain, the deposit would be returned to the renter. The landlord does not just say to himself, this person is a good renter so I am going to evict them! The deposit is therefore used to cover expenses like repairs, loss of rent etc. Pat

They do have the right to retain it for unpaid rent. They have to deduct it from any amount they might try to sue you for later though.
