Is there an good antivirus for free other than AVG?

Two good free ones are Avast and Active Virus Shield.

Active Virus Shield is new (made by Kapersky) and rated very highly in terms of detection, it checks for updates hourly- but it slows down the system a little more than AVG. I'm also a bit leery of the terms & conditions in their end-user agreement.

And Anish D's boiler-plate is about 3 pages too long :)

I like Active Virus Shield. A lot. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world. Best of all it's free.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

No other Free anti virus software is better than AVG.

But if you are really concerned with the security of PC, then get a real time protection by paid anti virus software like Kaspersky.

AVG is total JUNK. I recommend active virus shield. I use it and would never have anything else.
