Yes, it will still make noise because it vibrates (the tree) when falling and the earth also vibrates. Our presence or absence will not affect the event unlike in quantum physics.

No, and no I'm not trying to be different. When something like a tree falls, and it strikes something like the ground, or another tree, compressed airwaves are created. Now noise, or sound, are by definition, compressed airwaves that are interpretted by the ear, as that sound and are responded to as such. If there are no people (or animals) close enough to the tree to interpret the soundwaves that were created, then by definition it did not make a sound (noise). It was just a bunch of high velocity compressed air waves traveling in all directions until it dissapated.

No, it doesnt make a noise. It causes a local catastrophy. It destroys many living things upon impact many times causing those living things to suffer horribly before they actually die. It also irreversibly alters its role as an ecosystem all of its own, dislocating families of birds and their nests, insect habitats, and senselessly destroying entire herds of mushrooms and throwing entire colonies of moss into darkness. A falling tree is an evil weapon of mass destruction among the non-human, forest civilizations of the world. Perhaps one day, the creatures and plants of the forest will join together in solidarity against the existance of this horrible weapon, and collectively fight to require all tree type creatures to grow sideways along the ground, and put an end to the tyranny of the evil and heartless eco-system, and usher in a new age of peace and order in the worlds habitats.

Just because you have a PhD does not mean your not a fool, there are plenty of well educated fools around this place. and yes it does still make a noise, back in high school we did an experiment kind of like what one of the people above suggested, we took a smaller tree and put it in a sound room so none of us could here it, and taped if falling, and guess what? even though none of us could here it, it still made a noise when it fell, so how much did your PhD cost you? and can you get a refund!!

Yes even if some one is not around to hear it; it still makes a sound, because sound waves move through the air and sound is vibration that move around in particles and a lot of things make noise

Quantum physics says no. If an event occurs without an observer observing it, the event never occurs.
However, one can argue that the ground would be the observer in this case and be absolutely right. Hence, it does make a noise.

Place a voice/sound recorder and leave it there. Be back when the tree had fallen down and play your recorder to see if it made some noise. lol. common sense...

no one knows. if no one is there to hear it, how do you know it made a noise ?
how do you know the light in your fridge goes out when you close the door ?
how do you know you exist ? this could be a dream.
you could be dead.
and of course the real question is, if someone who cant speak English wrote ,
"I don't speak English
About me: My real name is Ryan. personaly i usually go on here when i have nothing eles to do. I do like chatting with people and making friends so i would be honoured if you would like to add me to one one of your contacts thankyou."
in their profile , would anybody notice?
