I do not understand the line at which welfare ends and being an idle g-t starts. The very poor and unfortunate and sometimes the stupid should be helped but those who are deliberately idle should be pushed back into work but how the heck that can be done I do not know.
A man I know a brother of a friend has not worked for over 30 years he has good A levels etc I and his brother have retired and are on company pensions, lucky us, the brother is actually no worse of than we are because he knows the system. Whilst I would not like that way of life it does make you think a little

Welfare needs to be temporary, then it would work, but people have made it a lifestyle to live on welfare. If you look into a doctor's office, many of his patients have a job at burger king but they rolled their ankle. They complain and sap up money to get it x-rayed over and over only to be told the same thing: it will heal soon enough if you just rest it. So those people want to stay home for months trying to "heal" their "hurt" ankle. They sap up money from people who work hard for the money. Peaople need to get out and work without help. Our government is not "big brother" here to protect us. It is here to govern us so that we may govern ourselves. That is the only way I can think of to put it, but you know what I mean. People now have a really messed up understanding of our Founding Father's original intentions.

A welfare state is necessary for a civilised society.
I doubt there will be any changes to the UK welfare system under Brown - he has held the purse strings for the last 10 years.

depends on your definition of 'a welfare state'
most of europe is considered to be made up of welfare states, yet few have nhs alternatives etc.
the notion of a true welfare state is idealistic, because of the human condition to be selfish, and yet, we MUST protect our own. otherwise we'll go backwards, instead of forwards.
i think its disgusting that women give birth in hospital lobbys because they have no health insurance in the US, also considered a welfare state.
what am i getting at? the state should be a body that gives, rather than recieves, as should its citizens.

welfare is good for the ones who really need it.. and thats the elderly, disabled (cant walk, see or talk), .. not these people who keep having kids and stay on it.. they have no reason to be on it.. they need to get out and work for a living and quit depending on 'my' tax dollars to pay their way.. i work hard for what i get.. i dont get 'freebies'!!!!.... i see so many of these people on welfare, food stamps, SSI at the casinos playing all nite.. or they are in the mall buying top brands of clothes, sunglasses, jewerly... so get rid of welfare or have it to the ones who NEED it...

Welfare needs to be only a temporary band-aid, not a lifestyle and a paycheck.
