Hollyhocks are kind of an old fashioned flower. They are just not all that popular because the plants are tall and they can be fairly easily blown over in high winds. Once they've flowered, the stalks are kind of unattractive. A number of bugs think they are delicious, too.
But they are stunning... I have some in my garden.. very dark purple ones.. almost black... they're gorgeous right now. :-)

I live in Montana zone 4 I have holly hocks here and there in my flower beds the colors I have are white, lite pink ,darker pink, burgandy and yellow I love my holly hocks because they are tall and fill in the back part of my flower beds the one thing i dont like about them is that they reseed like crazy i have to give the plants away because they are constantly reseeding and they come up in the oddest places but i love giving plants away so I guess it's all not bad. we live in a windy town and i do not have a lot of problems with the plants falling over-and one of the neatest things is in the fall i take a few of the old stalks and tie it around my mailbox (which stands alone out by the sidewalk) and i add a few sunflowers and corn stalks and throw a few pumpkins around the base and it decorates my yard up for back to school and in to halloween and thanks giving and each year i add a few different things and I get more compliments on my mail box soYes I love my hollyhocks!

Julies' right, "old fashioned", here in SW N. Dakota, it was one of the few flowers the homesteaders could get to grow in this God's tantrum of a climate. Many of the old timers around here associate them with hard times. This year is the centennial of our little town of Hettinger,ND and when the Centennial Committee asked me to design and plant a garden to commemorate the event, the only flower they specifically asked for was Hollyhocks! No, there is nothing wrong with the Holly Hock. It could be that they are just not that popular. Holly Hocks usually do well in zones 5-9 so that shouldn't be the problem either. Probably just a matter preference.

possibly the weather doesn't work there. We had 'em in Iowa when I was a kid. Loved making hollyhock ladies.
