chinese influenced cultures...confucian cultures...china, taiwan, korea, japan, vietnam, etc.
the custom is so old, it is before the concept of zero for age reckoning.
There is no year zero in the Gregorian calendar either.
As early as the 4th century BCE, the Chinese started leaving a blank space for the zero symbol, used in conjunction with the traditional Chinese counting board and the smaller abacus; and evidence exists attributing to the Chinese the use of the actual "0" before 686 AD.

certain Orientals believe the child starts to age from the time of conception where Western culture feels the child starts to age at the day of actual birth. the Western idea stems from the idea that at birth the individual is independent from the mother, even though the child still will need care for a number of years before gaining total Independence.

This is popular in Chinese culture - traditionally, the whole nation ages on New Year, not their individual birthday. But modernized Chinese don't really believe/follow this anymore.

In Japan, a child is said to be "1" from the day it's born until it's 365th day (366th on a leap year).
It's just what they do.

Why? Because she her mother was pregnant for nine months so that counts as a year? no, that is kind of retarded..
It may not even be a religion or culture it may just be HER belief, it may be how she feels!
