they would only understand the situation but never really understand the experience ... in other words they only can imagine...

Well, a person doesnt always have to experience something to understand. They can sometimes imagine what a person is going thru. OR, maybe the person HAS experienced it, but they have just never told anyone.*

They only say they understand to make that other person feel better. Its a cheer up method - They want to make you feel like they know what your going through so you dont feel like you have to go through it alone.

i was helping out at the children's church earlier on, and i've said at least 3 times I UNDERSTAND their feelings and tiredness.
its true, one doesnt have to be young and fight again just to understand the anger of being provoked, nor does one have to have attended a children's church before as a kid, to understand the impatience of the kids.

They are understanding where you are coming form simply because they are using what's know as empathy otherwise experience wise they don't understand.

they don't it's their way of attempting to comfort you or that they pretty much understand that you're goin through something hard... more like a i can imagine what you're going through but i couldn't possibly relate

some people can be able to put themselves in your shoes and try to see how it would be to undergo the same situation and can understand what you must be going through
