If Edison had a needle to find in a haystack, he would proceed at once with the diligence of the bee to examine straw after straw until he found the object of his search... I was a sorry witness of such doings, knowing that a little theory and calculation would have saved him ninety per cent of his labor.

Edison was a very 'modern' sort of businessman: that is, someone very skilled at building tollgates across roads that others had constructed- a coupon clipper, credit- and ideas-stealer.

It is a testimony to his effectiveness that so many respondents have reacted so angrily to your question- in most cases, history exposes those who steal credit from others, but Edison is so much a part of American mythology that you offend people just by questioning his status! Certainly he stole many of Tesla's ideas, and made sure Tesla got nothing... not just less than he deserved, Edison was determined to steal EVERYTHING. Edison for instance though DC power supply was the way of the future, but it was dead end. He was wrong, but no matter, just steal the ideas of those who advocated AC.

Certainly Tesla was very naive, and a more suspicious man would have been better at guarding his ideas from a charlatan like Edison. In fact, these sorts of happenings were quite common among the eccentric inventors of the period 1850-1940.

Edison did have some good ideas, but mostly he just took the credit for others, and he was an utterly ruthless businessman- many of you might say 'so what?' but you should at least reconsider your apparent image of Edison as an inquiring pioneer. Those who have attacked you should do a bit of reading.

Thomas Edison didn't invent squat. He is a common thief who stole inventions. Same as Alexander Graham Bell. It's been proven that black gentlemen were behind the inventions. White people are really nothing but thieves.

Not an idiot. Edison was a successful businessman who had ideas and hired people to make them work--and usually took the credit for himself. His laboratories had an enormous amount of patents. Unfortunately, the people who worked for him (like Tesla) were often shafted by Edison.

We might remember Edison as a great inventor, but few people even today call him a great man. The ethics weren't there.

Thomas Edison was not scientifically trained and relied exclusively on 'trial and error' for all his scientific research.

Trial and error, does work. But it is a painstaking and labor intensive procedure which the scientific method circumvents.

Through 'trial and error' Thomas Edison 'perfected' the lightbulb, invented the phonograph and invented the motion picture 'movie' camera, but he kept few notes and his few journals are unscientific and hard to follow.

It was true that Tesla was a jealous rival, but he essentially relied on the truth in his critique of Edison's methods.

Edison was a bit crazy, but neither a fraud nor an idiot.

Tesla isn't a good source to go to for an objective assessment of Edison. Tesla was a genius, with more intuitive insight than Edison, but generally lacking the exact sort of determination and perseverance that made Edison more successful. They were old rivals and frequent enemies.

Telsa was cheated by Edison, and had a serious axe to grind with Edison's refusal to honor agreements. At one point, Telsa was offered $10,000 by Edison to invent a AC device, and when he did it, Edison later told Telsa he was joking. Telsa later quit and dug ditches rather than work for a man hye felt had cheated him. They became bitter enemies for the rest of their lives.
