Even if Kobe retires the Lakers still own his rights. He could not decide a year or two later to come back and contract with another team because he still would owe the Lakers some years under his current contract.

He can retire, but he will miss out on about 20 million dollars, and lose his shoe contract with nike, as well as sit out 2 years until his current contract expires.

Because contracts dont allow for things like that. Unless they decide to trade him, he is stuck with LA for the amount of years of his contract whether he is playing or not.

He can't go to another team as long as he is under contract unless he gets traded.
