There are rightist cons and leftist libs who say things to cause controversery. Don't believe what you hear in Y/A, not every Dem feels like that.

Yes that was stupid... If you want to serve the country, then by all means do it, I come from a military family, all Marines mainly... There is a mix of both Democrat and Republican... when it comes to supporting the troops, it has nothing to do with the President, or which war, its the troops, you guys don't get to decide what war to fight, or when.... Serving the county is one of the most patriotic things you can do, and should be held up with the utmost respect... I give you major props for wanting to help out all citizens here by sacrificing yourself so they can be stupid and ignorant... just ignore the ignorance of some of the people in this country, they will never understand the reason they are allowed to say things is because of our troops.

The problem is, people in the military don't in fact serve their country in any meaningful sense of the phrase.
Since the leaders send them to fight unjustly, what they're actually doing is wrong.
Their motives may be good, but the actual results of their following their orders is to harm others, and therefore ultimately, us.
If you want to do some good, go into a career where you will do good, not harm.
If our government were just, it would be another story.
The most unpatriotic things I've read on this site have been calls to incarcerate, or exile, or torture, or kill everyone who speaks their mind against the current administrations crimes.
THAT'S unpatriotic.

Speaking as an independent, I don't think you should get too wrapped up in what other's think, that's not the way to live your life. Take some advice from someone who has already answered this question for himself: Some people hate the military and what they perceive it stands for, others love it and see it as a solution to every problem. Both sides are partial, so you have to do what you think is right for you. Just remember, there's nothing worse than an uninformed decision, so do your research and realize what the consequences of your actions are, then do what you think is best for you.

Yes, the main reason many in the armed forces join is to serve and protect their nation. The Democrats have tremendously underminded the essence of what is means to be an American by calling our ver own forces stupid. Your efforts to join the AFA are indeed very patriotic and I'm proud of you for serving your country at such a young age when others, at the same age, are being taught to hate America you are standing up for those of us who still believe in America unlike the Demoncats.

Ok I was reluctant to read all of this thinking it was probably banter but I read it a you make a good point... kinda. Thing is that you have to remember that at any time that VP could just be 'handed the crown' so to speak. Accidents do happen (just ask JFK), so the VP really isn't just something to brush off and ignore cos that person could very well be calling the shots tomorrow.

It's brave of you to want to serve your country, especially in a controversial "war" of this nature. It's not stupid. Blindly suppoting one's party is stupid. Republicans who deny Bush's evils and that he's a horrible leader are stupid. Democrats who blindly hate Republicans are also stupid.

I think it's sign of how divided & lost this country is, like the 60's & vietnam, there is huge divisions socially & politically, & it's unfortunate those who choose to serve their nation, as you do are sometimes caught in the middle.

I am a Democrat and I am proud of you for wanting to serve your country. Our military is NOT Cheney and Bush, who never served in a war themselves. I am ashamed of anyone who denigrates the defense of this country and the people who serve it.
Good luck to you and keep up your faith in our country. It needs more now than criticism and infighting

Wanting to serve you country in this way is the ultimate and you have great courage that those who called you names will never have. They are not patriotic but not all liberals are like that and look down on your service, but as a conservative I a happy you wish to risk your life for our freedoms in such a tough time.

Those that give you a thumbs down were probably not even American at all. If they were they are pathetic useless examples of them. I think if you get accepted into the AF Academy you are one lucky person and I congratulate you. A great education and serving your country. You couldn't do more to set yourself up for your future.
