The decisions to go with AT&T was simply that they made Apple the best offer, so they went with them. A lot of companies who make cell phones will allow their products to be used with several different providers, but as usual Apple felt the need to be different.

They work out a deal with one of the providers. All the providers are able to try to work a deal and the one that helps the company out, they go for.

Apple had a huge bargaining chip with the Iphone. It has been being hyped for months.

Money, of course plus the fact that AT&T is truly a 'blue-chip' company. We ALL owe quite a bit for the work done at Bell Labs in the '60s and '70s
